The Facts About Tobacco
Smoking Is The Best, Most Reliable Way To Wreck Your Health
The results of long term smoking are plain to see.
Smokers often develop a weather beaten, slightly haggard look and it is usually easy to identify someone as a smoker simply by the way they look. If you want to look good for longer, why would you smoke?
The Truth About Smoking Tobacco
You already know smoking is bad for you but do you know how bad it really is?
Reading this should get you fired up to stop smoking!
Cigarette Smoke Is Poisonous
The poisons inhaled when smoking slowly build up in the bodies cells gradually causing damage to them. This is what causes premature aging and the host of other health problems smoking is known to cause.
Smokers suffer from lung damage, heart and circulation problems as well as a markedly increased chance of developing cancers. There is a long list of known human carcinogenic substances found in cigarette smoke and many of these carcinogenic materials are known to bond to our DNA and cause mutations.
Tobacco Additives
There almost 600 additives that may be put in cigarette tobacco, which when burnt have the potential to produce about 4000 other chemical compounds. ( Burning is a chemical reaction that changes compounds from one state to another giving off heat in the process.)
If a substance is approved as a ‘food additive' and thus allowed to be added to cigarettes it doesn't follow that the same substance will be safe when burnt due to the different chemical compound produced by the combustion of the original substance. As I understand it, the food safe additives are not tested for food safety when burnt.
Secondary Smoke
Secondary smoke is a well documented cause of health problems for all those who breathe it at work, in the home or at social gatherings.
Second-Hand Smoke A Danger To Unborn Children
For pregnant woman, secondary cigarette smoke has been shown to be particularly harmful to their unborn babies and a documented cause of reduced birth weight. Secondary smoke also subjects unborn babies to an increased risk of birth defects due to the toxins absorbed from cigarette smoke via a mother who is breathing second hand tobacco smoke – or is a smoker herself. Second hand smoke itself is a significant health danger to unborn babies. Smoking is also considered a cause or contributing factor in miscarriages and premature births.
Infants And Children Also At Risk
Once a child is born, secondary cigarette smoke is also particularly harmful to them and can cause respiratory problems such as asthma. For children exposed to passive smoking and living in an environment where tobacco smoke residue permeates into pretty much everything, the risks to their health is markedly increased.
Secondary tobacco smoke exposes children to an increased risk of:
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
- Asthma
- Lung infections
- Bronchiolitis (Inflammation of the bronchioles, the smallest air passages in the lungs.)
- Tuberculosis
- Increased susceptibility to allergies
- Chron's disease
- Learning difficulties, delayed developmental milestones and possible behavior problems and stalled cognitive development.
- Tooth decay
- Middle ear infections
- Skin problems
Secondary Smoke And Adults
The bad news for adults subject to secondary smoke is that it is just as bad for adults as it is for children. The harm caused by cigarette smoking is not much reduced by light or infrequent smoking and as secondary smoke can linger for hours it is insidious, can be barely noticeable but is still dangerous.
The Rest Of The Bad News
Smokers are often unfit, seem breathless, cough often and frequently develop a hoarse voice and emphysema in later life. It is real bad news for people with a predisposition to being asthmatic to either keep company with smokers let alone smoke themselves. In fact smokers are three times more likely to die before the age of 70 than non-smokers. Here's why……
Cancer Is A Likely Side Effect Of Smoking
The toxins in cigarette smoke have been demonstrated to cause a number of diseases and cancers. In fact smoking is a known cause of cancers that can develop in the lungs, lips, mouth, throat, in the bladder, in the liver, the bowls, the breasts, cervix and in the bones – in fact anywhere and everywhere.
The statistics are scary. Take lung cancer for example.
A man who smokes regularly has, subject to other causes of death not being present, a 22.1% chance of dying of lung cancer before the age of 85.
A man who has never smoked has a 1.1% chance of dying of lung cancer before attaining the age of 85.
Health Risks Attributable To Tobacco Smoke
Tobacco is the single greatest cause of preventable death worldwide; one the World Health Organization says killed 100 million people during the 20th century.
Tobacco is recorded as being the single greatest cause of preventable death in the USA, causing over 500,000 deaths each year in the USA alone and in China, estimates put 1/3 of all China's adult males at risk of premature death due to tobacco smoke poisoning.
Unfortunately the last few years of a smoker can be pretty grim as their health fails and they have to deal with the final stages of smoking related diseases such as emphysema, heart disease or cancer. My Blog has the full story.

About the Author
For several years I have been concerned about the increase of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancers.
I am also concerned about an increasing number of unfit people in modern western societies. I feel very strongly that we, as a society, are going to facing huge problems in future years dealing with a bulge of health problems that will strain our health services to breaking point.
I have had some work experience in the health field but I also do a lot of research which I combine with some pretty pragmatic down to earth life experiences to produce readable commonsense health information.
I have a blog health site, www.ClearSkyHealth.com, where I publish my articles. I look forward to readers feedback and welcome suggestions for future topics. If you have a question I will endeavor to answer it for you.
